Test Patterns
Experiments in motion.
Video engineers rely on an array of tools to calibrate monitors and equipment with the idea that achieving accuracy and perfection will translate to a better viewing experience for an audience. Never intended to be seen by the consumer, these colorful charts, diagrams and patterns usually remain behind the scenes. They are impossible to decipher to the untrained eye and there is a unique test pattern meant for every kind of TV, camera and projector function. They have code names like the Philips PM5544. I've always loved staring at these graphics and their dynamic color palettes, geometric shapes and mechanical icons. They have evolved since the beginning of television from grayscale charts into high resolution digital video images. Without them an actor's skin tone might end up an unnatural green or the fizz in a cola commercial would never be seen in precise focus.
These unscientific test pattern experiments are a love letter to all of those classic video engineering tools.
